Why did jermaine jones switch to the US?

I know his father was an American soldier stationed in Germany. I know he was born in Germany. He did spend time as a child in the United States. So why the change? Did he feel like he was more American than German? If so then why didn't he play for the US in the first place? I would just like to know what he said the reason was. Or did he just think he would have a better chance of playing for the US then Germany?
